World record signing, Paul Pogba has had his performances scrutinized to even the tiniest detail after his high profile switch back to Old Trafford from Juventus. The 23 year old France international has struggled for consistency in the Premier League, and is close to being labeled a flop, with betting Odds of him cutting the mustard at the club fluctuating on a weekly basis.
He has scored just five goals since re-joining the English giants, amid calls for his manager to drop him. Mourinho has refused to place him on the bench, as he believes the youngster will eventually come out good and prove his doubters wrong. Though, of late, he is finally starting to show some flashes of his undisputed quality.
The presence of Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick means the defensive shackles placed on him is finally loosing it’s stronghold as he is being given creative freedom to destroy opposition defenders. Jose Mourinho, the Red Devils manager believes the presence of Carrick on the pitch could help mitigate the Frenchman’s average performances. Carrick was exceptional in the draw against Arsenal over the weekend, a game in which Pogba was influential alongside Herrera as the midfield trio dominated Arsenal in the middle of the park, a game in which they ultimately failed to win following a dramatic 88th minute equalizer by Olivier Giroud.
Speaking after the game, the 53 year old Portuguese said, “The midfield is playing very well. Pogba, Carrick and Herrera are playing very well” “Pogba is adapting much better in relationships, with the intensity of the competition and he’s much more confident. “Obviously he plays with some guidelines over his position, but at the same time with some freedom to occupy some attacking areas where he feels and thinks he can be important.” he added.
Once Jose sanctioned the world record purchase of Pogba at £89m, he thrust the player into the spotlight given the nature of his transfer fee. He struggled to get the players around Pogba to get the best out of him, but in Carrick, he seems to have found the perfect antidote to Pogba’s ills.
