Bastian Schweinsteiger has set a bold aim for his first year at Manchester United – to win the Premier League title.
The former Bayern Munich midfielder became the first German to play for United at the weekend when he came on as a substitute in the second half.
And although he has played at Old Trafford before, to do so for the first time as a United player was a very special experience.
‘It was amazing,’ Schweinsteiger admitted. ‘A great feeling when I warmed up. I was surprised. I hope in the future we have a lot of good results and that we can win the title.’
The player was speaking at an event to launch one of the many sponsorship deals with the club and was alongside fellow new signings Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphs Depay.
Schweinsteiger is certainly saying the right things and endeared himself to supporters by pledging to replace anyone who bought the new United shirt with ‘Schweinsteiger 23’ on the back (though we’re not sure why people would do that considering it was pretty obvious he was going to get the number 31 shirt!)
‘What a pity, Florian,’ he told a supporter on his Facebook page. ‘I will send you a signed jersey in order to help you out here. Thank you for your great support! Amongst all other fans, who send in a picture wearing one of my old jerseys, I will give away 31 Manchester United jerseys. Just publish your image as a comment under this post. Looking forward to receiving your pictures!’
What a guy, eh?
