A former United star has recently signed for one of the top clubs in Switzerland.
Markus Neumayr, who played for the club between 2003 and 2006 has signed for FC Luzern of the Swiss Super League from FC Vaduz. Speaking exclusively to Retro United he reveals how the move came about: “I have been in contact with the coach of FC Luzern for some time now and he has always told me that when the time was right he wanted to add me to his squad.
“After the departure of a couple of players he called me and basically told me to pack my bags.”
Markus is pleased to have joined one of the top clubs in the country and made his debut in Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Basel: “It’s a great club with a really good infrastructure, an amazing stadium and most of all very enthusiastic supporters.
“At the moment we are fourth in the league and in the semi-finals of the cup so it can be a great year for the club.”
Based in the city of Lucerne, Luzern are managed by former Liverpool defender Markus Babbel. The club play their home games at the Swissporarena and achieved their greatest success when they won the league title in 1989.
Asked whether he would like to say anything to the fans of his former club FC Vaduz Markus says: “I wrote a letter on my Facebook page, unfortunately Vaduz didn’t want to publish it on their website. I was a little disappointed with that but I have to accept that they want to close the whole chapter and concentrate on fighting relegation.”
Recent events have meant that Markus has struggled to keep an eye on United’s fortunes but he insists that now he is settled his attention will be back on his former club: “Unfortunately I haven’t been able to keep up in the last few weeks because I have been quite busy but now I am settled in my new home I will have both eyes back on the Red Devils again.”
