Former Manchester United defender Viv Anderson says Jose Mourinho will get the bets out of record signing Paul Pogba if he plays a three man midfield.
Pogba, who signed from Juventus for £89m in the summer, has struggled for form since returning to United and his performance was once again criticised in yesterday’s defeat at Watford.
The growing consensus is that Wayne Rooney should be dropped so that Pogba is moved into a position where his talents can be more effective; regardless of the identity of his team-mates, Anderson believes Mourinho needs to think about his formation.
“It’s been a bad week for Man Utd. Now is the time for Mourinho to earn his money,” Anderson wrote on his Twitter page. “I honestly think he doesn’t know what his best eleven is. Specifically, how to accommodate Pogba and Rooney. Surely Pogba’s best position, where he has played his best football, is in a 3 in midfield. But if he goes to a three, can Rooney play out wide. I don’t think so.”
