David May Preview: Manchester United v Newcastle United

Former United defender David May previews the Newcastle home game on Saturday.

Not a great performance in midweek but I thought we played well in patches and if we can’t beat Basel then we don’t deserve to be in the Champions League. It’s not been a great week for City or Chelsea either, Andre Villas Boas looks like he might not even see Christmas at this rate.

Mancini should be fine if they get knocked out but if their league form starts to dip as well, I don’t think the City board will be too impressed. That’s the good thing about United, the Gaffer is in control, he is always building for the future and he knows things take time. We might not have the best squad in the world at the moment but we have still won the Premier League and got to Champions League Finals. I would take that again this season, then improve the squad in the summer!

Onto Newcastle this weekend and if anyone had told me at the start of the season after all their problems in the summer and Mike Ashley that they would be fourth in the League at this stage I would have called them crazy but Alan Pardew has done an incredible job. You might say I’m going mad too now, because I think after these tricky few fixtures they will continue to surprise people and I can see them finishing well up in the top half of the table. Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool will climb ahead of them in the Premiership but there’s no shame in that.

They do have some good players, Tim Krul, Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa would be useful in any squad. They always give 100% and seem to have a good team spirit. That plus a well organised defence is the ticket for success. However, let’s not get carried away we should have more than enough class to overcome the Geordies with or without Wazza. It would be nice to see Berba and the Little Pea starting upfront with Nani and Young on the wings.

Fingers crossed for a happy day at the Theatre of Dreams!!!!!!!

Danger man: Yohan Cabaye

I have been really impressed with him this season, I didn’t see much of him when he played at Lille and I thought Newcastle might struggle in the centre of the park without Barton and Nolan but he looks like he has been playing in the Premier League for years. He knows how to control a game, play the right pass at the right time and I think as he gets used to the players around him he will start to create and score more goals. Also when Tiote comes back from injury that looks like a very decent midfield pairing, I can see bigger clubs coming in for them if they continue to impress on Tyneside.

Prediction : United are gonna win 3-1 against Newcastle  – about time Nani scored again!!!!

United have even surprised our fans this season! The high league position is built on a good defence and some excellent results. 13 games in, I’m afraid the “haven’t played anyone yet” wail just doesn’t wash. I think United will give Man U a good game on Saturday.
