EXCLUSIVE: Ex-United Star ‘Ramos Just Using United’

Manchester United legend Gordon Hill has voiced his concerns over the potential signings of Sergio Ramos and Bastian Schweinstiger.

Rumours regarding the Spanish defender intensified yesterday when it was claimed he has informed Real Madrid he wants to leave the club. But Hill believes it may be a ploy in contract negotiations.

‘Could he be using Manchester United to get a new deal, as we see time and time again in the press? I’m not convinced that he genuinely wants to go,’ Hill said, exclusively to RetroUnited.com. ‘And honestly, I’m not totally convinced that he’s what we need. Is he good enough for the figures being mentioned? Real Madrid have surely had his best years. Even in the event that he did sign, it concerns me that over the last year we just seem to be throwing money at the problems.’

Hill of course is referring to the big money signing and loan deal of Angel Di Maria and Falcao respectively in the last week of August’s summer transfer window. Despite hopes that United would get their transfer window activity done early, Memphis Depay remains their sole signing to date. Links with the Bayern midfielder Schweinstiger do little to encourage Hill.

‘He’s played just 43 league games in two years and with the expensive gamble of Falcao fresh in the memory it’s a case of once bitten with me,’ admits Hill. ‘He’s a player I’d have perhaps been excited about two years ago. But as we’ve seen, what good is a reputation if that player doesn’t do it for United?’

‘It’s encouraging to hear that young players will be taken to America but what choice do we have? Are these the players we will be counting on for the new season, and if not, then can we really say it’s going to be the best preparation?’

Gordon Hill has a camp in Macclesfield in July – the details are available here.
