Ex-Manchester United boss Tommy Docherty has described the club’s new manager as a ‘brilliant control freak’. Docherty says that he can understand why Louis van Gaal left the Holland job to manage the Old Trafford club – because he followed the same path when leaving the Scotland job to come to United in 1972. “I’d had a great time at Scotland and we were very successful”, Docherty told TalkOfTheDevils.com. “But you had a game every two or three months and I missed the activity of club football, a game every week and training every day, and I wanted to get back into that. You don’t miss international football, but you miss club football, and I can see why Louis wanted to go back into it. United are the biggest job going so he couldn’t turn that down.” Docherty believes that the club have got the right man for the job, both because of his achievement and personality. “You never argue with people’s records as a coach when they’ve proven themselves. I think he’s brilliant, but in the nicest possible way, I think he’s a control freak,” ‘The Doc’ says. “He’s very authoritative – what he says goes. And he’s right, nine times out of ten. You look at his record and it blows you away.”
