Former Manchester United winger Jules Maiorana says that new signing Angel di Maria still has to live up to his price tag of £59.7m despite the furore that surrounds his arrival.
Di Maria has been hailed as the answer to United’s current problems by some but Maiorana has urged caution. “People are speaking about him as one of the greats but for me I have to be honest and say he’s still been hit and miss whenever I’ve seen him, and although he’s definitely an improvement to United’s squad, I’m not completely convinced he’s what they need,” admits Maiorana. “He was the man of the match in the Champions League Final but I watched him for Argentina in the World Cup and sometimes his decision making was a little off. I saw him attempt a rabona when there was no need for it and I’m not sure that’s the kind of over elaborate playmaking that United need.”
Despite that, that improvement to United’s squad means that Jules feels it is a positive move for the club. “He’s definitely a quality player and he has looked amazing in some clips I’ve seen. It’s just dangerous to judge a talent by YouTube. He looked a hell of a player in the Champions League Final, and I favour watching players like him when he’s on song, but he needs to be more hit than miss. He can’t just be a big game player because United don’t have that many big games, I’m sorry to say,” says Jules. “Everyone has bad games but he has come into the game as the record transfer in Britain and he has got to do it week in, week out. He’s still got a transfer fee to justify and it shouldn’t be taken for granted that just because he came in for big money he’ll sort everything out.”
Di Maria is expected to feature against Burnley at the weekend.
