EXCLUSIVE: Higginbotham: Schweinsteiger Still At His Best

Former Manchester United defender Danny Higginbotham says that the club’s new signing Bastian Schweinsteiger is in a wonderful position to offer the best of his ability to the Old Trafford club.

There have been some suggestions that the Germany captain is past his peak but Higginbotham – now one of the most widely respected pundits in the game – believes that his old club have got one of the premier midfielders in the world.

‘I don’t agree that he is past his best. He’s never relied on pace,’ Higginbotham told RetroUnited.com, exclusively. ‘Top players like him have a yard in their head. He won’t need to cover every blade of grass either.’

Higginbotham believes the much-decorated star will contribute significantly to his new club’s style of play. ‘He will more than likely sit in front of back four allowing the likes of Herrera and Schneiderlin to do the box to box running,’ says Danny. ‘He’s a natural leader which the club hasn’t had enough of. He will be very important in allowing the full backs to get forward and give the width as well.’

After announcing the signing of Schweinsteiger, the Reds completed and unveiled Morgan Schneiderlin, the former Southampton midfielder. Higginbotham believes the much-sought after star could be equally important.

‘Schneiderlin is another fantastic signing,’ says Danny. ‘I saw him a few times last season and he dictated the midfield, and is full of energy as well. He gets goals – which is something United are short of from midfield. He is a player that can pick a pass and like Schweinsteiger he will bring out the best in the players around him. In any game you have to win the midfield battle to earn the right to dictate the game and he will help with this no end.’

United’s first pre-season game is this Friday and both players are expected to take part.
