Manchester United legend Gordon Hill believes that making Wayne Rooney the new club captain would be a “joke”.
Rumours surfaced over social networking on Saturday evening that Rooney has already been told that he will succeed Nemanja Vidic as United captain, and former winger Hill is dissatisfied with the suggestion.
“I think, if it’s true, it’s a joke”, declared Hill. “It is pampering to him so that when the manager comes in, his nose isn’t put out of place by Robin van Persie being so close friends with Louis van Gaal.”
Hill was outspoken about his annoyance when Rooney was rewarded with a new contract under former boss David Moyes, stating that he felt it was undeserved after the player had reportedly tried to engineer a move to Chelsea.
On who he feels should be the new captain, Hill feels the next candidate may not even be at the club.
“For me, I would look for someone outside of the club. There are reports of us trying to sign de Vrij, and he strikes me as someone who might be the best man for the job” said Hill.
The former United player has recently announced the release of his autobiography later this month and will attend a signing of it at Waterstones at the Trafford Centre on 29th July.
