The imminent arrival of Italian defender Matteo Darmian is a ‘great deal’, according to former Manchester United winger Jules Maiorana.
The Torino star is set to sign for the Reds for a fee of around £13m before the club go on tour on Monday and Maiorana, who was at Old Trafford from 1988 to 1994, says he thinks his old club have got a great deal.
‘I think it’s a great deal for Utd regarding Darmian, who’s impressed playing for Italy, considering the price and wages,’ Maiorana exclusively told RetroUnited.com. ‘The money they’re talking about isn’t a massive gamble, looking at the signing of Di Maria, £60million +wages. Falcao on the reported 300k.’
In a period where United have been linked with more than fifty players, the signing has caught many by surprise. You could say that it has matched Darmian’s rise to prominence in the Italian game over the last year.
‘I watched him live at Fulham last year in the Italy international… I haven’t watched much Italian football over the last couple of years so I hadn’t seen a great deal of him in Serie A,’ Jules admits. ‘But me and other Italians I went to the game with came away from it really impressed with his performance. With that in mind I have got to be honest and say I haven’t seen enough of him to say if he’s better than Antonio Valencia, but, like I said, United have got a great deal.’
Darmian is reportedly flying into England today with a view to the move being completed with immediacy. The Reds want to be able to take the defender on tour with them and they are due to fly to the US on Monday.
We could hear more as soon as today, or, the club may wait until the scheduled press conference on Friday which has been set up to formally unveil Memphis Depay.
