Manchester United legend Gordon Hill says the club should make Gareth Bale their number one target and do all they can to bring in the Real Madrid forward this summer.
Reports of the club’s interest in the world’s most expensive player have begun to resurface in recent weeks and Hill – who played on the left wing for the Reds himself – would love to see Bale occupy that season.
‘On the left hand side he would be a phenomenal signing, but what price do you pay?’ Hill exclusively told RetroUnited.com. ‘He’s rarely injured, he’s tremendously fit, and has so much talent. When you hear of the money we are looking to pay for some players, I don’t understand why Bale hasn’t been the number one target, and why he wasn’t first choice when we brought in Di Maria in the first place.’
Bale has suffered a surprising amount of criticism for his performances in his second season and ‘Merlin’ feels it has been unwarranted.
‘Gareth might not want to be seen as a failure in Spain but I don’t think that he would be if he left,’ Hill insists. ‘He has had some stick but I think he’s done a great job over in La Liga. He’s suffered abuse from Spanish fans who don’t like him and it’s been unfair. I’ve seen a few Madrid games where he has been isolated and almost frozen out of games by their own players but he’s done as well as he could be expected to.’
There were suggestions that Bale’s representatives met with United delegates in London late last week and there has been some talk that the player’s family have been unsettled in Madrid. Bale’s goals were partly responsible for the most recent trophy successes of Real Madrid, with strikes in the Champions League and Copa Del Rey finals last year.
