Manchester United legend Gordon Hill has blasted his former side’s ‘awful’ display against Aston Villa yesterday.
The Red Devils flattered to deceive with a 1-0 win that means they have a perfect record from their two games so far. However, both 1-0 results have come with a heavy slice of luck and assistance from the opposition, with Adnan Januzaj’s first half strike last night taking a huge deflection before it went into the goal.
And Hill – who was name checked on Sky before the game as exactly the kind of player United are missing – was left unconvinced.
‘It was a boring game and we got out of jail again – Villa were awful,’ insists Hill. ‘People are praising the defence, but no-one stood out for me. Villa should have got a penalty.’
United’s two wins have come from just three shots on target this season and Wayne Rooney has looked as if he is struggling to adjust to playing as the main striker, where before he has thrived.
The result has prompted optimistic supporters to declare that they are happy that there are at least small signs of progress but Hill has concerns about when United will come up against better sides.
‘If we play like this against better opposition, forget it,’ he says.’It’s the same old, same old, as far as I’m concerned.’
