Forget Ronaldo, Mourinho tells Ed Woodward to sign Champions League winner – Report

By Dave Marshall

Despite signing Victor Lindelof and nearing deals for Nemanja Matic and Alvaro Morata, signs still abound that Jose Mourinho is still seeking for a player that will elevate his team to title favourites immediately, and has tasked the Manchester United board, headed by Ed Woodward to get him Neymar, who currently plies his trade with Barcelona, as per Spanish source Dario Gol.

The 54-year-old Portuguese tactician is still smarting after a disappointing 6th placed finish last season, which was negated by winning the Europa League, which put us into next season’s Champions League group stages.

Mourinho could likely consider the 25-year-old Brazilian superstar, who may be open to a move away from Barcelona to step out of Lionel Messi’s huge shadow at Camp Nou.

United want to transport themselves to title contenders next season with the acquisition of a marquee signing. Antoine Griezmann was close to a move to Old Trafford, but the failure of Atletico Madrid to rescind their transfer ban meant that the Frenchman couldn’t be allowed to leave. Cristiano Ronaldo was a target after his threat to leave Real Madrid, and was rumoured to be on United’s wishlist, but Mourinho had reservations about his compatriot’s ego, attitude and long term ability given their rocky relationship when the former Chelsea manager was in charge of Real Madrid.

Neymar is a classy forward famed for his attacking instincts, dribbling and finishing. Since moving to Barcelona in 2013, he has scored over 100 goals and won lots of trophies. If he gets signed to United, he will be a good signing both on and off the pitch, as his marketability means United stand a lot to gain should he sign.
