Manchester United overcame bitter rivals Liverpool in a comprehensive 3-1 victory to win the ‘International Champions Cup’.
United had qualified for the final of this friendly competition by virtue of their convincing wins over Roma and Real Madrid but fell behind in the first half when Steven Gerrard converted what seemed like the 99th penalty awarded to Liverpool against the Reds in the past year.
They were denied a 100th when Raheem Sterling went down easily in the book shortly after.
It was a disappointing start after high octane performances but United showed impressive resilience to respond in the second – Liverpool were unable to cope with Louis van Gaal’s men in a 5 minute spell which saw Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata turn the game around. Late on, Jesse Lingard made it three, to secure the result.
