West Brom fan who lives in Manchester here,
I too was at that game, although a misplacement of tickets meant I only arrived at 2-0. Of course all Albion fans at this point had resigned themselves to a heavy defeat. You mention the Gibson substitution, I personally think this had a profound effect on the game. Albion played with three in the middle of the park, two who you mention, and the massively under-rated Youssouf Mulumbu. We seemed to seize a level of control, or at least stem the tide of pressure, thereafter.
Once we got to 2-2, courtesy of Van Der Saar’s error, I sat and braced for the kitchen sink, it never really came. I actually remember Graham Dorrans having a decent half-chance to score near the end.
I believe of your 19 home games that season, that was the only one you didn’t win? Which would imply there was no huge underlying issue. Perhaps just a bad day against a team brimming with confidence. Crucially too, small margins fell Albion’s way with the two goals. A really enjoyable day, I wish they’d sort the leg room out in the away end though!!
