Injury Update: Mourinho confirms reliable star will miss CSKA Moscow game

By Mark Weasley

After our morale-boosting win over Arsenal in the Premier League last weekend, we turn attention to the Champions League as we welcome Russian giants, CSKA Moscow to Old Trafford in midweek. We can seal our qualification with a draw and ahead of the Manchester derby at the weekend, José Mourinho will rest a number of players to prosecute the European tie.

Goals from Jesse Lingard who netted twice and Antonio Valencia were enough to secure a victory at The Emirates last weekend, but we have an injury concern heading  into the clash at Old Trafford as Mourinho has confirmed that midfielder, will miss the game. One player that will definitely miss the clash is Serbian powerhouse, Nemanja Matic who José says is injured.

He won’t want to risk the player as the derby looms meaning that the 29-year-old player will be looking towards the weekend. Matic was forced off in the victory over Watford but made an instant return against the Gunners. However, it would seem that he is still carrying a knock and Mourinho knows he must not risk him in the game against Basel.

Speaking at the AON Training Complex to MUTV ahead of the game,Mourinho said “We have problems, we have injuries,”  “Matic is injured and when I say he is injured, he is injured. I am not going to make him play so Matic is out. A couple of others guys are playing every match and they also need a rest. More importantly, the other guys deserve an opportunity to play.” He added.

Matic was in fine form against Arsenal, consistently offering quality in the middle of the park and proving to be a good defensive cover aerially after wave after wave of Arsenal attack.

Matic has been phenomenal ever since from Chelsea in the summer, offering stability and calmness in the heart of the pitch. Without him on Tuesday night, we shouldn’t be in too much trouble as we have other players that can play but we need him to be well rested for this weekend’s game against City. The match kicks off at 7:45pm UK time on Tuesday night.
