The transfer speculations at Manchester United in recent times have surely come to stay. The 20-time English champions are looking to bolster their defensive options come January and have identified Serge Aurier as that man to take them to the next level. The Daily Mirror believes that Jose Mourinho has been impressed with the performances of the all-action right back, who despite his disciplinary issues, is one of the best full backs around, and probably the best in France. The Ivory Coast international has been a key player for Unai Emery’s men this season, making 10 appearances across all competitions.
The 23 year old was watched by Manchester United scouts in his country’s goalless draw against France, in which he played 90 minutes. The likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham have all been linked to the right back, but have been put off by his off and on the pitch misdemeanors. In May last year, he was sentenced to two months in prison after clashing with a policeman. Earlier this year, he was suspended by his club after being filmed uttering vile insults at Laurent Blanc, his former boss and some of his club teammates. He is currently valued at £18m and has a deal at the Parc des Princes till the summer of 2019.
Aurier is a physically imposing right back, who combines his attacking and defensive duties in the best way possible. The former Toulouse right back is fast, powerful, somewhat creative and is a tough tackler. He is also a fierce competitor, as he takes every duel with his opponent very serious. Mourinho has identified the player as one who needs a manager who truly believes in him, and will offer him the platform to excel, though he will have to curb some of his excesses. PSG may be willing to cash in on the player, as he has brought them enough bad PR.
Aurier will definitely be a good signing for United. Antonio Valencia is aging, while Matteo Darmian has yet to fully convince his manager of his ability. Yet, his disciplinary record may stand in the way of any potential transfer.
