Liverpool legend makes bold statement over Man United summer transfer plans

By Dave Marshall

Former Manchester United player, Michael Owen has stated that manager, Jose Mourinho is keen on buying his way to success based on the transfer activity that has been seen since the Portuguese tactician took over from Louis van Gaal last summer. United finished a distant sixth on the Premier League table last term, but still won the Europa League and League Cup.

Owen also believes the club will mount a serious title challenge this season following the arrival of Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic.

Owen, who played for United between 2007 and 2010, stated this when speaking to ExpressSport. The Liverpool legend, who also played for United is a certified Premier League legend as his 150 goals put him in the top 10 for number of goals scored, meaning that he is an authority to speak on United affairs.

He said, “Mourinho seems intent on buying more and more players. “Matic is very much a signing for Mourinho’s time, his birthday was this week [he turned 29], it’s not an investment for 10 years down the line, he’s buying something for the next four or five years.

“There’s a signal of intent, it’s the here and the now that’s important for them as well as the future in buying someone like Lukaku [24].

“But they’ve strengthened again, they needed to. They were well off the pace last season and definitely expect a better season off United this year.” he added.

There is a growing feeling at Old Trafford this summer that the league title could finally return to the club after five years away and Owen shares those sentiments. Jose has always won the league in his second season at every club he has managed, and given his know-how on winning league titles, it is a possible dream.

United have a squad depth that can’t be rivalled in the league meaning that there will be no issues of burnout granted we remain injury-free next season.
