Manchester United are one of the biggest sporting brands on the planet, and sometimes, that comes at a price. More often than not the Red Devils find themselves in the middle of an absolutely absurd transfer rumour. I guess that just comes with the territory.
The latest report coming from mainstream media is linking United with a move to bring in Barcelona star Neymar. Now 25, the Brazilian is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world, playing for one of the biggest teams on the planet. And it is not a surprise he is being linked once again to Manchester United. A lot of bookmaking companies keep adjusting odds of the Brazilian leaving Barca this summer but we doubt there is anything in the rumours.
The odds of Neymar leaving Barcelona is increasing by the day. Could the bookies have been privy to insider information? Only recently Duncan Castles of daily record confirmed Neymar has told his friends he believes Manchester United will trigger his release clause. At this point in time, the Old Trafford club are undertaking one of the biggest rebuilding jobs in their history, and it always felt like the possibility of luring Neymar away from a side that wins trophies every year was going to be a long shot.
In a recent interview, United boss José Mourinho confirmed that is indeed the case:
“It’s speculation. I always try to be objective and pragmatic with clubs and to ask them what they can give me. To ask for Neymar is absurd.”
The signature of Neymar would be a truly wonderful piece of business, but unless United were prepared to offer him some sort of outrageously high weekly wage, I just cannot understand why the player would want to move.
It’s positive news that Mourinho has addressed this gossip right at the source and confirmed that it is nonsense. It allows the manager to focus wholly on summer targets who are obtainable, and it means the fans cannot be left expecting a player like Neymar to walk through the turnstiles at the Theatre of Dreams anytime soon.
Whatever happens this summer, I’m sure the manager will spend the club’s money wisely. He has gotten every single one of his four Manchester United signings 100% correct so far, and I’d also say Mourinho has let the right players leave Old Trafford, too.
