Manchester United to step up pursuit of sturdy defender  – report

According to reports in the Spanish media, Manchester United could be set to make a move for 22 year old defender, Jose Gimenez who currently plies his trade for Atletico Madrid in the Liga Santander. The Uruguayan defender has struggled for game time this season under Diego Simeone, with the Argentine manager preferring a partnership of Stefan Savic and Diego Godin.

The Mirror reports that United will make a move for the player, who is widely regarded as one of the best young players in the world in that department, but will face competition from Italian champions, Juventus.

It is believed that the Bianconeri will look to sign him as a long term replacement for Leonardo Bonucci, who left Juventus to join AC Milan. Gimenez. His release clause is currently set at £60m, though United won’t possibly pay all that money for the young player.

Jose Giminez

Jose Mourinho regards Gimenez highly as he is not fully impressed with some of the players he has at his disposal. The likes of Daley Blind and Victor Lindelof have really struggled to impress Mourinho, an avid admirer of highly talented defenders.

Though United boast the best defensive record in the league, Mourinho is still looking at reinforcements to bolster his ranks as we continue to chase Manchester City, who have looked as though they are running with the league title. Gimenez is a defender who still has maturing to do, as he is sometimes known for his rashness in the tackle, but his talent is not in doubt.

However, while his talent is not in doubt, his immediate enhancement is not really visible as the long-term defensive partnership at Old Trafford still looks like a Jones-Bailly bromance.

Gimenez is a physically imposing defender known for his determination, grit and positioning, attributes the manager looks for in defensive targets. He joined Los Rojiblancos in 2013, and has made 101 appearances, scoring 5 goals for the 2014 La Liga champions.
