Manchester United boasted the second best defensive record in the just concluded Premier League season after Tottenham, but United do need to strengthen in the middle of the park. The Red Devils midfield currently don’t have a midfield enforcer in the mould of N’Golo Kante, who is currently turning heads at Stamford Bridge, and has won the PFA and Premier League Player of the season after a series of eye catching and mouthwatering displays all season.
Football evolution has meant that the role of the midfield destroyer is now more enforced. The lack of world-class defensive players in the mould of players gone by such as the likes of Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi and also that football has become much more attacking has meant that defences suffer a lot without the cover of a defensive midfielder in front of them.
Jose Mourinho has always loved water carriers, players willing to do their job and cover for their teammates without taking the glory for themselves. He has worked with the likes of Makelele, Thiago Motta, Sami Khedira and Nemanja Matic and it has been said that his error of not signing a player in this mould has cost him in his first season. Marouane Fellaini is not disciplined enough, Paul Pogba can’t do that role for the amount he was bought while there are concerns as to whether Ander Herrera can do it for a whole season. Step forward Idrissa ‘Gana’ Gueye.
Former Aston Villa man has definitely been overshadowed by Kante, but the statistics prove otherwise. No player has more tackles than the Senegalese’s 135, while he also managed 81 interceptions, exceptional figures for a player not really given much spotlight.
He will not require a huge transfer fee, and will be cheaper than other players in his position. United have finished sixth in the league this season, and if we are to be successful next season with players the manager is planning to bring in, they need a player they can depend on. No player available now can do that better than Gueye.
