My Best XI: Markus Neumayr

RetroUnited.com have been running a ‘greatest ever’ Manchester United team series since last Monday.

You can’t have missed it if you’re a regular reader of the website – hopefully you’re one of the hundreds who have participated in the vote so far. If not, there’s still time.

The vote for United’s best ever goalkeeper ends today.

The vote for the best ever right back ends tomorrow – click here for more information.

For centre backs click here, and left backs, go here.

Over the last two days we have been running the midfielder polls, with the right wing options here, and the centre midfielders vote today.

Our writers have been giving their opinion. Editor Dan Burdett gave his thoughts on the goalkeeper selection early this week while renowned historian and best-selling author Roy Cavanagh MBE gave us the benefit of his learned eye.

We are humbled and fortunate to include regular opinion from former United players  and one of those, Markus Neumayr, is the first to give us his input, fresh from a successful season as FC Vaduz’s star performer as they stayed up in their first season back in the Swiss top flight.

Markus joined United in 2003, dubbed ‘the German Beckham’ – comparisons that have remained with him as recently as this season – and the experienced midfielder named two teams, one based on players he played alongside and another ‘greatest ever’, as Markus grew up a United fan.

‘The team I played with -Tom Heaton, Danny Simpson, Gerard Pique, Ryan Shawcross, Kieron Richardson; Markus Neumayr, Darron Gibson, Tom Cleverley, Chris Eagles; Frazier Campbell and Giuseppi Rossi,’ Markus tells us.

And his best ever XI –

Schmeichel
Gary Neville  Stam  Blanc  Evra
Beckham  Keane  Scholes  Ronaldo
van Nistelrooy Cantona
