Fred is expected to undergo a medical at Manchester United today to finalize his move, which would make him the first signing of the summer
In January, the midfielder was close to moving to Manchester City, but they decided to shelve a move for him.
Back in May, Sky Sports reported that United were in advanced talks to sign the 25-year-old, but it seems that all that is left for the deal to be announced are just minor details. However, here’s what Fred will look like when he dons the shirt.
United want to sign the player before the World Cup in a bid to make a statement of intent. The retirement of Michael Carrick and the imminent departure of Marouane Fellaini means that the Red Devils need midfield re-enforcements, even if Ander Herrera and Scott McTominay improve next season.
Nemanja Matic offers power and solidity and Paul Pogba, flair and drive, but the duo need a jack-of-all-trades alongside them capable of helping in various phases of play.
Fred’s arrival would complete a trio that has power, finesse and pace in equal measure. He has made over 150 appearances for Shakhtar since joining the Ukrainian giants five years ago and his Champions League performances last season earned him a reputation for being one of the best all-rounders in Europe.
Fred, alone, would not transform us into a side capable of winning a title, but his signature would represent a big step forward.
