There is a tear in our eye today as we round up the gossip from the last day of the transfer window. It’s been a ride.
It wouldn’t be deadline day without some kind of nonsense. Having got so many creative players and forwards that we’re giving half of them away at knockdown prices, supporters are desperate to see a defender and midfielder. Obviously, then, we’ve been linked with Radamel Falcao, the Monaco striker who was deemed, for a time at Atletico Madrid, to be the best number 9 in the world.
So, where did these rumours come from? It seems like the last hurrah of the ITK. If you use Twitter then you know what we mean, a foreign person says “Man Utd”, “Falcao”, any number, and some words. Then someone translates it and people decide that means he’s coming. Ben Jefferson of the Express has gone to town with the rumour, adding there’s a £50m fee agreed but not much else. Considering it’d be the second most major transfer of the summer, we’d expected a little more.
In the same spirit, we decided to get some news ourselves. “Buono estente, regard Foghorn Leghorn, I say I say boy, halambro deth pereth Chrissy Waddle, het et teth, het et teth, sminky pinky Falcao ultimento four years Manchester abrigado sportsolo,” our source Antonios Gubba of Chanel 9 Neus told us. “Bombo Chipolata zero, Club Athletico Vaccum zero.”
Same paper, different reporter – James Dickenson says United have given up on £30m Vidal. But Louis van Gaal hasn’t. It’s probably not going to happen but it is at least worth noting that the transfers of the last few weeks have definitely been those ordered by the manager. The supposed makeweight of a week ago, Javier Hernandez, is expected to complete a loan move to Real Madrid. Interesting.
Daley Blind is expected to complete his move today, but the Marcos Rojo work permit issue is probably going to drag on until afterwards.
The Sun claims Danny Welbeck has been offered for £5m on loan – Sunderland appear interested. But Tom Cleverley’s move to Aston Villa is in doubt because of his wage demands. Wow.
