Press Red: July 18th: Stones, Pedro… Messi?

A little later in the day than usual but with United’s pre-season friendly we wanted to bring news from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.

Louis van Gaal has said there may be a ‘surprise transfer’ and also that Javier Hernandez’s chances of first team football are ‘better’.

So, who might that surprise transfer be?

It’s doubtful that Van Gaal was speaking about Mason Holgate, the young Barnsley defender who is set to join for £1m according to various sources.

It’s also doubtful he was referring to John Stones, who the Daily Mirror say we are set to compete for alongside Chelsea.

No, it’s unlikely to be a defender at all, given that Van Gaal was talking about strikers at the time. The Mirror say that we may make a surprise £22m move for Barcelona forward Pedro. Well, it’s more believable than the stories that we may be interested in Lionel Messi, which Argentinian outlet Olé distanced themselves from very quickly indeed. Though that would be a surprise.

What wasn’t so much of a surprise was Sky Sports’ breaking news yesterday evening, informing us that David De Gea would leave United on a free next summer if he doesn’t sign for Real Madrid this.

Yep… thanks for that. To be fair, Sky have been fighting a losing battle ever since the growth of the instant social media platforms such as Twitter. On deadline day in 2013 they informed United supporters there would be some major breaking news after the break. It never came. This year of course they announced the breaking news that Ilkay Gundogan had agreed a deal with the Reds, with nothing to substantiate it.
Anyway, that’s just our 2p.
