REPORT: Senior United Player Set For Exit After Having Shirt Number Stripped

Perhaps the most surprising news from the squad number release was that Victor Valdes has had his shirt number revoked.

Valdes wore 32 last season but has fallen out of favour with manager Louis van Gaal, who publicly slammed the former Barcelona goalkeeper in pre-season.

“He doesn’t follow my philosophy. There is no place for someone like that,” Van Gaal said in the USA. “Last year, he refused to play in the second team and there are other aspects you need as a keeper at United. When you are not willing to follow those principles, there is only one way and that is out.”

Valdes responded by posting a series of comments on social media appearing to reject the criticism and re-affirm his commitment to United, but this very public snub shows that without any shadow of a doubt, the player has no future at Old Trafford.

There were rumours of a move to Valencia earlier in the window and also suggestions the player may move to Turkey – it is now expected that he will move soon, despite United having a shortage of players capable of stepping up as a senior number one. Sam Johnstone is expected to start tomorrow against Tottenham after Van Gaal confirmed David de Gea wouldn’t play.
