Report: United Midfield Duo Set For Loan Switch

Manchester United midfielders Ben Pearson and Joe Rothwell are set to join Barnsley on 6 month loan deals, BBC Sheffield is reporting.

Sports editor Andy Giddings confirmed the news on his Twitter account and said that the news should be confirmed next week.

Pearson is no stranger to Oakwell, having spent the last few months of last season on loan at the Yorkshire club. He impressed in his 21 games there – obviously enough to be brought back.

In April the England youth international spoke glowingly of his time at Barnsley.

“I came here just for experience originally and hoping I could kick on,” he said. “Whether next year I can be in the first-team fold, you never know, or go out on loan again, hopefully to a Championship side, so it would be good if Barnsley get promoted.

“I’ll see what happens. I’m not tied down to anything. I just want to play my football and enjoy myself. I’ve extended the loan twice and all the lads have been great. I’ve been playing every game and playing well, kicking on, which is good experience. There is such a difference and I think it’s the next step in my career. I needed to do it. I saw a lot of Under-21 action in the last 18 months or so and this was the next step. There is a massive fanbase here and what a club to come to. It was underachieving when I first came but we’ve kicked on since then.”

Rothwell, meanwhile, spent a couple of months at Blackpool last season, making three appearances (but just one start). The midfielder is almost twenty one and will surely see the move as an opportunity to start building a career away from United. Pearson – still highly thought of, despite United’s big money midfield signings – will probably hope that his continued development may help his cause to be given an opportunity at Old Trafford in the near future.
