Manchester United pulled out of the race to sign Barcelona’s Pedro after receiving encouragement in their pursuit of Thomas Muller.
Weekend reports suggested that Muller has decided he wants to follow Bastian Schweinsteiger to Old Trafford and following further reports this morning that United have tabled another offer for the German forward, it is being rumoured that a move may happen swiftly.
The German champions have publicly denied talk of a move but if Muller insists he wants to leave, they may feel convinced to negotiate if the price is right.
It has not been a secret this season that Louis van Gaal’s preferred target would be Muller, with Ed Woodward hoping to lure Gareth Bale in July. Van Gaal has been hesitant to sanction the signing of Pedro but seemed quite happy for Woodward to fly to Spain with the purpose of making the move official.
However, in the time it took Woodward to travel to Spain, it seems that Van Gaal received sufficient encouragement from the Muller camp to hold fire.
It is worth noting that the interest in Pedro was real and significant, unlike the rumours of Nicolas Otamendi, and so, United’s decision to pull out of the move must surely have only been made if the club were sure of getting in an adequate player.
