Tonge’s Tips: Manchester City

In partnership with SetantaBet, 7Cantonas.com brings you “Tonge’s Tips”, a look ahead to the Premier League games in the 2012/13 season with a bit of a twist. Just like last season, Alan, the 7Cantonas team and the good fellows over at GGMU and United Rant are going head to head in their predictions, and want you, our readers, to join in.

Alan: After a series of calamities, howlers and downright mis-beliefs, we head into the big one. To be honest, I don’t know what to expect here and haven’t got a clue what to tip up! It could literally be anything from 0-0 to 4-4! Said that, I’d never bet against us in a one to one scrap and in the hope that some of the Utd players can find their hearts, I’ll go Man City 1 Man Utd 2 (10/1 with Setanta Bet)

For the bonus tip, I’ll head to Arsenal v West Brom and suggest the gunners to bounce back and take the heat of Arsene. I’ll go Arsenal 3 West Brom 0 (10/1 with Setanta Bet)

Mart: It’s the big one on Sunday as United travel to the Etihad to face their fierce rivals. United will be looking to press home their advantage at the top of the Premiership and what better place to do it than against a side that haven’t lost at home in well over a season.

Unfortunately, United are suffering with injuries and with Anderson, Nani, Valencia, Vidic all confirmed out and Cleverley a major doubt, United will need to be at their very best to get the three points. The best way to beat City will be to start as they did against Newcastle and Chelsea but with such attacking talent being injured, that is easier said than done.

City haven’t impressed this season and neither have United so this one won’t be a cracker and it’ll be decided by a single goal with United winning 2-1 (10/1 with Setanta Bet)

For my other prediction I’m backing West Ham to beat Liverpool 2-0 (11/1 with Setanta Bet)

Ed: Look away, there’s nothing to see here. Certainly that has been the over-riding response to Manchester City’s 7-1 aggregate Premier League victory over Sir Alex Ferguson’s men last season. Six points which swung the title towards Eatlands to herald a new dawn in English football. Yet, as the cliche goes, while getting to the top may be hard, Roberto Mancini’s men are finding out that staying there is somewhat more troublesome – a succession of draws on the road has left City trailing United heading into this weekend’s derby.

Strange season then; one in which United has rarely found form, but leads the Premier League by three points. Victory, however unlikely given City’s imperious home form, will leave United in a commanding position heading into Christmas. Ferguson is unlikely to count that chicken just yet.

Indeed, United’s defensive troubles leave Ferguson in a quandary; trust in his strikers’ form and attack an uncertain City, or retrench into the defensive mentality that so backfired at Eastlands last season.

Yet, with injuries now afflicting a quartet of midfielders – Antonio Valencia, Nani, Anderson and Tom Cleverley – Ferguson’s options are limited. This may leave the Scot deploying another narrow midfield and relying on experience to eek something out of a difficult tie. United certainly cannot defend so poorly as Ferguson’s outfit did at Reading and hope to take anything from the weekend’s game.

Recent history suggests that is a unlikely feat. City 2 United 1 (8/1 with Setanta Bet)

Elsewhere West Ham United host Liverpool in a not so classic mid-table six pointer. Neither side is likely to be dragged into a relegation scrap this season, but the game should offer a glimpse into two differing football philosophies. Brendan Rodgers vs. Sam Allardyce. Mediocre vs. insignificance. 1-1 (11/2 with Setanta Bet)

Setanta Bet are offering a £5 free bet to the first person who posts a prediction that beats the team, and the scoring is as follows :
