Tonge’s Tips: Newcastle United

In partnership with SetantaBet, 7Cantonas.com brings you “Tonge’s Tips”, a look ahead to the Premier League games in the 2012/13 season with a bit of a twist. Just like last season, Alan, the 7Cantonas team and the good fellows over at GGMU and United Rant are going head to head in their predictions, and want you, our readers, to join in.

Al A very tricky game to call. My heart always says Utd to win, my head is thinking the worse! We have not hit top form as yet, albeit pinching wins along the way (e.g. Southampton, Liverpool and FC Cluj). Newcastle will be fired up due to last seasons annihilation and we have to bounce back from the Spurs defeat. Weighing up both of these factors, I’m going to suggest a 1-1 draw (11/2 with Setanta Bet)

For the bonus tip, I’ll go with Sunderland to take a point off City. Dortmund taught them a footballing lesson on Wednesday night (with City getting out of jail) and O’Neil is canny. I’ll go 1-1 in this one too! (9/1 with Setanta Bet)

Mart After last weeks pulsating loss to Spurs, United will be looking to bounce back with a win at Newcastle on Sunday afternoon. United have lost two games out of six so far this season and this isn’t title winning form so avoiding a loss is a must. Thankfully our neighbours aren’t firing on all cylinders either and we are level on points as I type this.

Last season, United were hammered 3-0 in a completely one sided game with Newcastle’s midfield dominating ours and we need to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Newcastle have been less than impressive, unable to recreate the early season form of last season.

With Robin van Persie on a scoring hot streak with 7 goals in 7 games, I’m going to back us to pick up the three points here with a 2-1 win (7/1 with Setanta Bet)

Sunderland travel to the Etihad to face Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime. Last season this was a thriller with Sunderland narrowly missing out on all 3 points in a 3-3 draw. I don’t think we’ll see the same result but I’m backing both sides to score (5/6 with Setanta Bet)

EdEd When Manchester United last visited St James’ Park in January, heavy defeat told only part of the story that week. Demba Ba’s brace and a fine free-kick from Johan Cabaye inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Sir Alex Ferguson’s men – it came just four days after relegation bound Blackburn Rovers’ New Year’s Eve victory at Old Trafford. Five months out from the season’s dénouement and United’s domestic challenge appeared every bit as forlorn as that in Europe.

Yet, defeat on Tyneside marked a sea change in United’s fortunes, with Ferguson’s men first challenging and then overtaking Manchester City in the Premier League title race in the Spring. History concludes that United’s challenge was unsuccessful, but that 4 January defeat to Newcastle seemingly sparked the Reds’ campaign into life.

The new season brings new challenges, but just a week after defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, Ferguson can only hope that a modicum of history does not repeat at St. James’ Park on Sunday.

United’s inconsistent performances to date have already brought two Premier League defeats in six games; it’s a loss ratio that cannot be maintained as the season progresses if Ferguson wants his team to challenge.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s own inconsistencies have seen the Magpies drop to 10th in the Premier League. But victory over Bordeaux at St. James’ Park on Thursday will have filled Alan Pardew’s men with confidence. It’s going to be a tough fixture for United. My prediction: 1-1 (11/2 with Setanta Bet)

Elsewhere there are better games than Chelsea v Norwich City at Stamford Bridge, but few with greater media focus after John Terry’s ban, the FA’s explanatory notes, and Ashley Cole’s Friday morning Twitter gaffe. Norwich could capitalise in the capital. 1-2 (28/1 with Setanta Bet)
