Tonge’s Tips: Southampton

In partnership with SetantaBet, 7Cantonas.com brings you “Tonge’s Tips”, a look ahead to the Premier League games in the 2012/13 season with a bit of a twist. Just like last season, Alan, the 7Cantonas team and the good fellows over at GGMU and United Rant are going head to head in their predictions, and want you, our readers, to join in.

Alan After getting our season off and running against Fulham (albeit with a scare or two) we travel over to Southampton for a Sunday, 4.00pm kick off.

It’s imperative we kick into some form now, however with the hosts having nothing to lose, this could be a tricky tie. After appearing to be a bit defensively unsettled still, i do think the home team will score, but it won’t be enough to give us a problem. I’m going to tip up a 2-1 victory.(7/1 with Setanta Bet)

For the bonus bet i’m going to suggest a treble this week:

Man Utd, Man City, Tottenham all to win.(1.57/1 with Setanta Bet)

Mart Southampton side that have lost their opening two games. Southampton narrowly lost to Manchester City on the opening weekend, then succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Wigan last weekend – they will be desperate to give their supporters something to cheer about.

United can hopefully field a defence which consists solely of natural defenders for the first time this season with Jonny Evans confirmed in the squad. United will be looking to build on last weeks victory, in particular the play we saw in the first half.

Despite two defeats, Southampton will not be easy to beat but I’m backing United to pick up all three points with a 2-0 victory.(6/1 with Stanza Bet)

For my other tip, Liverpool host Arsenal on Sunday at Anfield. After last weeks encouraging draw against Manchester City, I’m backing Liverpool to pick up the three points in a 2-1 win..(7/1 with Setanta Bet)

Ed Victory, however narrow, certainly felt good after United’s 3-2 win over Fulham at Old Trafford last week. Following defeat to Everton in the opening game of the season anything less than three points was surely unthinkable against Martin Jol’s outfit.

Another week, another game, and Sir Alex Ferguson will be seeking momentum from his side as United travel to newly promoted Southampton on Sunday. Already the Saints look like they’ll struggle in the division after losing to both Manchester City and Wigan Athletic this season.

There have been some classics against Southampton over the years, although Ferguson may wish to forget United’s 3-1 drubbing in 1996 when the legendary manager infamously blamed the Reds’ grey kit for defeat. Yeah, I didn’t believe that one either. The 6-3 hammering by Southampton at The Dell later that year merely rubbed salt into the wounds.

There’ll be no repeat on Sunday, of course. Not least because Ferguson’s men will be wearing the rather natty white away strip, which is both superior in design and far less embarrassing than the ‘tablecloth’ home kit.

On the pitch a comfortable victory should be United’s but with a leaky defence and an attack still knitting together Southampton could make a fist of it. Jonny Evans’ likely return is a godsend. With it United will at least tighten up at the back and a 2-1 victory is a good punt.(7/1 with Setanta Bet)

Meanwhile, over at big-spending Tottenham Hotspur Andre-Villas boas is seeking to build on a mixed start to the season as the North Londoners host Norwich City. New signings Hugo Lloris and Clint Dempsey can’t play until after the international break, but Moussa Dembélé should start – a player many United fans wanted to see at Old Trafford. 3-1 to Spurs.(9/1 with Setanta Bet)
