Tonge’s Tips: Spurs

In partnership with SetantaBet, 7Cantonas.com brings you “Tonge’s Tips”, a look ahead to the Premier League games in the 2012/13 season with a bit of a twist. Just like last season, Alan, the 7Cantonas team and the good fellows over at GGMU and United Rant are going head to head in their predictions, and want you, our readers, to join in.

Alan After a relatively poor performance but a win last Sunday (we’ll take it!!) we face another decent test from a useful Spurs side.

Within our recent history, we’ve managed to turn these over more often than not and I’ll back us to do the same again. That said, we haven’t hit full throttle by any means, and with the loss of Nemanja it certainly doesn’t help our cause!

However, all things considered, I’m going to plump for us to dig deep and take the victory 2-0 (5/1 with Setanta Bet)

For the bonus tip, I’m going to go with Norwich to heap more Premier League misery on Liverpool. This is not an easy place to get three points and with the home crowd baying for the scousers blood, I’ll go for Norwich to sneak it 1-0 (17/2 with Setanta Bet)

Mart After last Sunday’s euphoric and arguably undeserved win over Liverpool; United host Spurs at Old Trafford on Saturday evening. Spurs are looking for their first three points at Old Trafford since Gary Lineker scored the winner for Spurs in a 1-0 win in 1989.

United saw the return of Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher to the starting lineup in Wednesday night’s win over Newcastle but it’s probably too soon, certainly to see Fletcher start but we could see Wayne Rooney start but I’d be inclined to have him on the bench and then bring him on if needs be.

The injury curse has struck us again with Nemanja Vidic confirmed as being out for eight weeks after an operation on the same leg he injured last season and the news that Antonio Valencia left Carrington on crutches. We saw on Wednesday the formation change from what we have been used to so far this season so it remains to be seen how we’ll lineup.

Spurs haven’t started well this season and haven’t got into the flow that they had under Harry Redknapp, so I’m backing United to pick up the points in a 3-1 win (9/1 with Setanta Bet)

For my other tip I’m going to back Chelsea to beat Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon 2-0 (12/1 with Setanta Bet)

Ed Old Trafford welcomes Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s men chasing a seventh win on the bounce. The side has barely hit top gear this season, but victory over Liverpool at Anfield last weekend lifted the Reds into the top four for the first time. Liverpool may have dominated at Anfield, but Ferguson’s side has found the very healthy habit of winning so early in the season following that disappointing opening day loss at Everton. It’s a good habit to keep. Meanwhile, Andre Villas-Boas’ side has only intermittently played well this season, although two victories in the past week has reduced the pressure on the Portuguese for the time being.

The visitors bring a sense of glamour and – usually – a guaranteed three points for Ferguson’s side. Spurs last won at Old Trafford in 1989 – and has lost in eight of the past 10 meetings between the two sides. There’s almost no reason to take a punt against Ferguson’s men in this fixture. Yet, there are plenty of questions hanging over this United side, not least a lengthy defensive injury list and a midfield that was thoroughly dominated at Anfield.

Much will rest, once again, on how Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes cope in midfield. After all, in Aaron Lennon, Gareth Bale, Sandro and Moussa Dembele Villas-Boas has plenty of talent at his disposal. If Carrick and Scholes can take control then I fancy United to take it 3-1. (9/1 with Setanta Bet)

In the other big match Arsenal faces Chelsea at the Emirates. Wenger’s side is in outstanding form, although it will surely tail off in the Spring. It always does. For now Arsenal should dominate an unbalanced Chelsea side in midfield and run out 2-1 winners (9/1 with Setanta Bet)
